В рассказах «Убийство на улице Морг» (1841), «Тайна Мари Роже» (1842) «Похищенное письмо» (1845) и других проявилась склонность автора к умозрительному анализу, к последовательно-логическому изложению событий, даже невероятных. По старался придать своим рассказам характер фактов, имевших место в действительности, — отсюда полицейские протоколы, точные даты, ссылки на периодическую печать и т. д. Клубок противоречий, противоположных друг другу, запутанных фактов постепенно развязывается благодаря стройной системе логического анализа, перед которой бессильны любые загадки.
